Pulau Ubin: Singapore's Rural Island
Pulau Ubin: Singapore's Rural Island
Bumboat from Changi Point Ferry Terminal, ten minutes across. No cars on the island — only bikes and walkers. Rent a sturdy bicycle at the jetty and ride to Chek Jawa Boardwalk, a wooden loop threading mangroves, tidal flats, sandy shore, and a freshwater pond.
The mangrove walk comes first: roots bending into water as if listening. Then the boardwalk over exposed flats — starfish pale orange in the shallows, fiddler crabs in synchronized tap-dances, a heron perching on a post like a blue-gray punctuation mark. Kampong huts along the way, a bakery smelling of coconut.
Plan around low tide for the fullest reveal of life on the flats. Check tide tables. The bumboat costs a modest sum. Bikes rented near the jetty. Closed-toe shoes for the boardwalk's uneven planks. Limited food on the island — pack snacks. The light is kinder late morning or late afternoon.
